after almost 30 years as an educator teaching multilingual communication skills, I have helped learners of English and Portuguese and contributed to the professional development of language service providers
2010 - present: 675 students served
"Tools and Technology in Translation" ― I conceived the first class to be offered completely online as part of the Specialized Certificate in Translation (Spanish/English) offered by University of California San Diego Extended Studies. In 10 weeks, we explore online and offline resources that will help language service providers to increase their productivity, refine their research skills, and ensure top-quality translations. Students feel comfortable showcasing their talent and networking with clients and colleagues through a professional site, web profiles, and social networking outlets. They build teamwork and organizational skills and get ready to manage large translation projects. Newcomers become familiar with some industry-specific jargon to communicate better with project managers and other players in the translation field. Beginners and experienced professionals alike understand how Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools can help translators become more efficient, effective, and productive. Lastly, we reflect on how Machine Translation (MT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) currently interact with the language services landscape.
2014-Present: Speaking Engagements
Speaker at events organized by professional associations and platforms ― I have presented several live workshops to train translators in an array of bilingual communication skills, including at conferences organized by the American Translators Association (ATA), events coordinated by the Association of Translators and Interpreters in the San Diego Area (ATISDA), and on professional platforms such as Proz.com, Linguist Education Online (LEO), and Translators 101, among so many other organizations, associations, and unions.
2022-2023: Duolingo Classes
Portuguese Instructor ― During a short-term initiative implemented by the language-learning platform Duolingo, I taught intermediate and advanced Portuguese classes to English and Spanish speakers. We used aspects of Brazilian culture—such as music, TV series, and cartoons—to boost fluency and vocabulary acquisition.
2020-2023: Translation Confessional Podcast
Producer and Host — Across 116 episodes featuring special topics, reviews, and interviews, we explored various aspects of the professional and personal lives of language service providers, covering everything from career highs and lows to the joys and challenges of multilingual communication.
1998-2000: Computer Skills for Senior Citizens
Computer Instructor ― Focusing on improving the life and well-being of elderly women, I worked as an at-home instructor to help them use their computer to meet their most concrete needs, from communicating remotely with their children and grandchildren or storing and organizing files and photos, to playing games to unwind and improve their cognitive health.
1998-2000: English learners from 4 to 40 years of age
English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor ― I taught English classes at a language school in Santos, State of São Paulo, interacting with students from pre-school to high school and teaching private classes for adults who needed to improve their knowledge of the language for professional and academic purposes.
